Renzo Frau founded Poltrona Frau ('Frau Armchair’) in 1912, with a commitment to producing high quality handcrafted furniture. The early designs produced by the company reflected the art deco styling emerging from France, and the Victorian classic look from England. During this period, the company won several high profile commissions, including the Royal Family, and was embraced by the film industry with several pieces included in prominent movies of the time. Many of these early pieces remain in the collection today, and are a testament to Poltrona Frau’s heritage and the importance still placed upon the traditional art of furniture making.
Over the last century, Poltrona Frau has integrated modern materials with production techniques relying upon the expertise of several generations of furniture makers. The company’s contemporary product focus has always been respectful to their heritage and original promise to produce the highest quality products. The company celebrated its centenary in 2012 and is proud to be ‘Made in Italy’.
Poltrona Frau’s expertise in furniture making is combined with a long history of producing leather. The company’s patented ‘Pelle Frau’ is the result of several years of experimentation into production of the finest quality full grain leather. ‘Pelle Frau’ goes through a 21 step tanning process which allows for a tactile warmth & softness while maintaining contract grade durability.
Poltrona Frau’s quality and leather expertise has been recognized by leaders in the automotive industry - both Ferrari & Maserati use ‘Pelle Frau’ for their interiors.
